The new Lanvin ad is grotesque

Am I the only one thinking that the new Lanvin ad featuring some shit dance music is grotesque? Everybody seems to be praising it. I personnally think it's ridiculous and I would be scared to see my image endangered by such association if I were a Lanvin marketing manager... I like the brand though but I think it goes too far... And sorry if I am not being "fun".

What do you think?

An exhibition dedicated to Marc Jacobs to take place in Milan

Louis Vuitton plans to unveil a new exhibition paying tribute to Marc Jacobs durning Milan Fashion Week.  The curator will be the Stylist and Editor Katie Grand and will feature Marc Jacobs’ work since he started with LV in 1997 (you know when he was still grunge and cool).
The exhibition will run from September 22nd until October 9th. Is this a way to say goodbye and let him take over the artistic direction of Dior, as the rumours pretend...?

Van Gogh's Crabs - the National Gallery, London

Two Crabs
1889, Vincent van Gogh

"This is thought to have been painted soon after Van Gogh's release from hospital in Arles in January 1889. On 7 January he wrote to his brother Theo: 'I am going to set to work again tomorrow. I shall start by doing one or two still lifes to get used to painting again'. He was probably also inspired by a woodcut by Hokusai, 'Crabs', which was reproduced in the May 1888 issue of 'Le Japon Artistique', sent to Vincent by Theo in September of that year. In a related painting in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, the crab is shown lying on its back. Here it is probably the same crab shown both on its back and upright. The artist has used varied brushstrokes to convey texture. Parallel strokes sculpt the creature's form on an exuberant sea-like surface."

One of my favourite paintings of all time...

The "Cinema Effect" exhibition at Caixa Forum in Barcelona

Opening with the famous "Sleep" film by Andy Warhol, the exhibition The Cinema Effect taking place at the Caixa Forum in Barcelona showcases film and video works by a range of influential and emerging international artists who explore the ever-increasing impact of the cinema on our perceptions of what's real and what's illusion.

Douglas Gordon

Using an array of small-screen videos, digital pieces, large-scale projections and immersive installations the artists use the language and technics of films to create works that question our reality.

Among the very interesting pieces, I really liked Douglas Gordon's Off Screen piece which consisted in a video projection onto red curtain. In this work, an actual curtain made of screen-like material is overlaid by a red projected curtain, creating a three dimensional trompe l'oeil effect. People who pass through become performers which echo the Andy Warhol's concept of the 15 minutes of fame (the "Sleep" film sits just next to this installation).

The 2006's impressive Anthony McCall's installation "You and I, Horizontal II" was as fascinating as always, ( I remember the solo show at the Serpentine in London which already impressed me). It creates a real mystical, immersive experience...

Anthony McCall

Other highlights included Christoph Girardet's "Release" video which consisted in a collage of four takes from the 1933 cult classic King Kong which imitates the dynamics of pursuit, constraint and physical release, scary and hilarious at the same time...

Christophe Girardet

The show closes on 4th September so if you have a chance to see it, if you're in Barcelona, I recommend it.

Invader lost his virginity with South America

My friend, the street artist Invader that I had the chance to meet and interview in 2009 (click here to read the interview) when I was working for the Lazarides Gallery in London, has now conquered South America, the only continent he hadn't invaded yet.

The artist travelled to São Paulo and placed around 50 pieces in the streets of the Brazilian city. "Many of my pieces are placed alongside "pixos", very special Brazilian  graffitis that we can only find in São Paulo." he said.

‘Indonesian Eye: Fantasies and Realities at the Saatchi Gallery

Rudi Mantofani, The Earth and The World, 2006

Indonesian Eye, is Europe’s first major exhibition of Indonesian contemporary art and it will open at the Saatchi Gallery in London on 1 September.

This exhibition gives the opportunity to view works by major Indonesian artists and provides a  platform for the country’s contemporary art scene to reach an international audience. It comprises a selection of paintings, sculptures and installations by 18 Indonesian artists including [Nindityo Adipurnomo, Samsul Arifin, Ay Tjoe Christine] and pays tribute to Indonesia’s ancient myths and legends, while also reflecting the influence of modern Indonesia. Several satirical works employ traditional materials to highlight the country’s rapidly changing society. Some of the works also refer to the  influence of Indonesia’s Dutch colonial past.

I look forward to seeing it!

The Brazilian art scene will be really active in September

The "Festival Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo SESC_Videobrasil, organised by SESC - Servicio Social de Comercio and the Associação Cultural Videobrasil", has invited Olafur Eliasson as a special guest for its 17th edition which will start on 30 September. The curator is Solange Farkas. "Your body of work"is the title of this body of work which comprises 10 installations in Sao Paulo. It looks like an amazing work and I'd love to see it.

More news from the Brazilian art scene includes the start of the 8th edition of the Mercosul Biennial of Brazil on 10th September. The curator of the event is José Ignacio Roca. It will take place until November 15, and will gather between 107 artists from 34 countries, which makes it the most international edition held so far. Under the title "Testing Geopoética" the artists will discuss the topics such as colonization, border, customs, transnational alliances, geopolitical construction, location, scientific travelers, nation and politics.
